Marleen Newman (AIA, NCARB) is Associate Director of the J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program and Senior Lecturer in Architecture. Professor Newman is an NCARB certified architect holding licenses in Massachusetts, Indiana, and Florida. She teaches design studios, sustainability, historic preservation, urban design, and the integration between art and design.

Newman’s research, the impact of the Saarinens, Aalto and Lurçat on the development of Regional Modernism, places a new emphasis on “another stream” of Modernism illustrated by the early works of Harry Weese in Columbus, IN.

Prior to working at IUB, Newman held adjunct-academic positions in the Boston area while working full-time at prominent Boston firms including: Benjamin Thompson and Associates and Moshe Safdie and Associates. Newman’s design projects have included: offices, residences, embassies, concert halls, and large-scale retail. In Bloomington, she was responsible for the prize winning design at 555 Morton Street, an adaptive reuse and tax credit project.
