What is Platform?

Called "a research laboratory in contemporary arts and humanities," Platform is a new, integrative initiative housed in the Gayle Karch Cook Center for Public Arts & Humanities at Maxwell Hall. It was created to allow arts and humanities scholars at every level of education—from undergraduates to professors—to connect their research, via interdisciplinary collaboration to units on campus that do not normally work with humanists.

Led by PIs Ed Dallis-Comentale and Jonathan Elmer, Platform is invesigating two areas of scholarship: Indiana Studies and Global Popular Music.

Why Platform?

In modern language, a platform is understood as the space where digital interface and engagement happen. Think of social media platforms, and the shared intellectual exchange offered there. Connections can be instantaneous and information can be spread immediately.

But in its truest sense, a platform is a stage upon which things occur. It is a precondition for creation, a base for a multitude of futures. That’s what we’re building here at Platform: a strong base for the future of Arts & Humanities scholarship at Indiana University.
